(Chicago) – It’s a sunny Saturday morning and I brought my car to Honda service center for a quick oil change.  Actually, it would not be quick this time since there were other maintenance items that needed to be done. Feeling restless – I would wait for more than 1 hour and pay more than the $40 regular oil change rate. But then again, my safety lies in the condition of my car. So I stopped complaining mentally, left the car and tried to find what else to do in the area.

I didn’t realize that I was in Gold Coast area. A few blocks from Honda, I find myself in Rush St where good restaurants are thriving for years. It’s almost 12 noon and most of the restaurants were packed with tourists and affluent GC residents wanting to have a good Chicago brunch. My first 2 options had 40-minute wait to get a table. So I settled for a less busy one at Tavern on Rush.

I have been here for the after hours drinks with my project team a few years ago and I didn’t really care much about the food. I was there for the drinks anyway.  Though a little doubtful about its brunch fare, I agreed to settle here and the receptionist gave us a really nice table in the patio.  Brunch al fresco!

Here’s what my friend and I ordered:

Crab Cake Benedict – Lump Maryland crab cake, poached eggs, tomato, spinach and a toasted English muffin topped with hollandaise sauce

The Gold Coast – Double cream brie cheese, smoked salmon, asparagus and chive stuffed omelet served with a side of breakfast potatoes

The food is good but nothing extraordinary. Brunch menu is usually the same for most of the restaurants – omelet, poached eggs, muffin, and potatoes; however, the servings here are pretty huge and the plates look pretty. I can taste real crab meat in the crab cakes and it is tasty, well-seasoned. The greens and fruits on the plates taste fresh as well.

Another thing that makes this brunch experience good: people watching. The people living and hanging out in this area looks entirely different from other Chicago neighborhoods. Very entertaining! 🙂
