(Chicago) – I have never heard of Swedish food until I moved here to Chicago a few years ago. There are at least 5 Swedish restaurants in my area alone and all of these places specialize in breakfast/brunch. A few of these places serve food that is just fine; nothing special but edible enough; and I can name some that are just plain sloppy and almost bordering to bad-tasting food. I reserve the details for these on other future posts. But this space is about a Swedish brunch place that stands out above the rest. Located in North Park area of Chicago, it’s called “Tre Kronor”.

Tre Kronor serves typical brunch fares like pastries, omelet and French toast. However, their version of these brunch favorites is way better than many brunch spots, like Ann Sather, in terms of taste and freshness. The eggs are well pronounced in the omelet, compared to other places which serve flat-tasting egg substitute. The salmon has good balance of smokiness and saltiness. The bread and pastries, especially cinnamon rolls, are freshly baked and satiating, unlike those that are mass-produced in other brunch places. No wonder why Guy Fieri of Food Network visited this place in one of his episodes of Diners, Drive-in and Dives. The food is straightforwardly prepared with a few ingredients and yet, bold in flavors. Tre Kronor is a perfect place to cure hang-over after partying hard on Saturday night.

The sinful cinnamon rolls with freshly squeezed orange juice and sweet toasted rye break. Nostalgia attack: the latter reminds me a lot of my favorite childhood snack, pan-de-sal dusted with white sugar, then toasted to caramelize.

Oslo Omelette: smoked Norwegian Salmon, fresh dill and cream cheese

Vanilla and Orange French Toast:  Thick sliced egg bread with vanilla, orange and cinnamon
