(San Diego) –  I was excited for my first dinner in San Diego, but it almost got ruined by the glasses of free wine and snacks that I gorged the whole afternoon in the hotel lobby. In short, it was 8pm already and I wasn’t feeling hungry. But I would not dare waste the night without having a taste of San Diego.

“Let’s do some French eating instead,” my friend suggested. He meant it as to eat in small portions; whether true or not, I need to validate this statement about the French. However, it made a lot of sense to me that night. So I phoned the concierge and explained my dilemma. And the guy smartly advised that I should try a celebrated French bistro just a couple of blocks away from the hotel. It is called Café Chloe.

This is a perfect place for my not-so-hungry-and-extremely-tired condition. The ambiance is ultra classy and yet, very cozy and intimate. As soon as I got seated, I just can’t help but stare at one of the walls filled with equidistant frames of artsy black-and-white photos of women. Perhaps, one of them is Chloe. I should have asked.

Still life. This flower on the center of my round bistro table is stunning. I love it!  Chloe knows how to feed its diners visually: Simple, and yet, elegant.

Here’s what we got for dinner.

Jambon Persillade served with toasted bread, pickles and mustard

Steak and Frites with Roquefort, onion marmalade, and sautéed spinach & oyster mushrooms

The Jambon Persillade is a little salty but delicious on toasted bread with a little mustard. The steak, however, is perfectly cooked; it melted in my mouth. Not a big fan of blue cheese, so Roquefort crumbles were left on the side.  My friend ordered Bloody Mary with house made liquor or vodka.  It’s too peppery– almost disgusting. I settled for a glass of Pinot, instead. The food we got is light enough for 2 persons; just the right amount of food before hitting the bars for more bad-ass San Diego cocktails.

Will I be seen in Chloe again? Yes, I’d like to try the mussel belgique and duck confit.
