My San Francisco friends brought us to Patio Filipino during my last visit there. The food is outstanding, according to my standard at least. Actually, my standard is pretty simple – if a dish can make me eat more than 2 cups of rice, then it passes my taste standard.

Café Intermezzo
(Atlanta) – This place was my second home in Atlanta when I was still living there a few years ago. I have been numerous times to this café for afternoon coffee, Sunday tea, brunch, lunch, dinner, pre-party cocktails, late night drink and night cap; so many times I couldn’t count anymore. My friend Cha introduced me to Café Intermezzo almost 8 years ago and it became a part of my culinary indulgence ever since. This café is a European coffeehouse with a Vienna-inspired ambiance. It has more than a hundred different kinds of tortes, tarts, cakes, pies and cheescakes; over a hundred alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages; and wide array of…

Getting Lost in H-mart Again
(Chicago) – Wandering inside a grocery store has been therapeutic for me. I enjoy traversing every aisle and browsing interesting food stuffs neatly arranged in high shelf or colorful fresh produce misted every 10 minutes. I have been to as many Mexican carnitas, butcher shops, farmer’s markets, local specialty food shops and mainstream groceries, as I can. But my latest obsession is this Korean grocery, H-mart, in the Chicago suburb of Niles. I know I published a few posts about H-mart already. I can’t get enough of it. Last Sunday, I found myself roaming leisurely in this Asian food mecca again and letting myself get fascinated by the food that…

Sura Asian Bistro
(Chicago) – I used to love this place. My first dinner at Sura was about 4 years ago and came back for many more lunches and dinners afterwards. However, a common observation among friends, which I seconded, was that the food dwindled somehow in quality while the price inflated. Perhaps, the people behind the kitchen changed or whatever. But I think the food remains palatable and still looks pretty on the plate. Crispy Ginger Calamari – toasted chili & coconut, jalapeno with avocado-green onion emulsion – I always order this for appetizer but the number of calamari is slowly decreasing as time goes by. The center of this calamari mound…

Holeman & Finch Public House
(Atlanta) – When my trip to Atlanta was confirmed, the first place that I would like to visit is Holeman & Finch. Food Network featured this place in one of its episodes of “The Best Thing I Ever Ate” for its burger. I am curious how superior their burgers are over the numerous gourmet burger joints mushrooming all over Chicago. I excitedly planned my first evening to feast on Holeman’s handcrafted burger. My friend and I arrived around 9pm. Most disappointingly, the burgers sold out 10 minutes before we entered the door. I didn’t pay attention much when I watched TBTIEA; they only make 24 burgers every night. Whether it…

Broken Yolk
(San Diego) – My first morning in San Diego needed a humongous and hearty brunch to somehow cure the hang over caused by the reasonably priced vodka drinks in San Diego bars. A little research online and I was lead to Broken Yolk which is just 4 blocks away from my downtown hotel. Broken Yolk has been voted as the best breakfast place in San Diego, according to their website and some local food blogs. With my expectations building up, I did not hesitate to drag my aching body to this place and see, taste, for myself. A couple of blocks away from the location, I could already see a…

I got Lucky at Lucky’s Cafe
(Cleveland)– Guy Fieri of Food Network featured this place in his show “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives”. When I visited Cleveland not so long ago, I planned to spend my first brunch at Lucky’s. The restaurant is located in the historic and artsy neighborhood of Tremont, 10 minutes away from downtown Cleveland. As much as I wanted to stay in downtown since I am not familiar with the city, I headed out the next morning and relegated my brunch fate to Manolo, my Garmin GPS. I had high expectations that Lucky’s Café will give me a very good impression of Cleveland food. To simplify my morning, my friend and I just…
