One Year with an LVAD: Mark’s Journey of Faith, Science, and Survival

October 20 marks a powerful milestone in my life, one year of living with my LVAD (Left Ventricular Assist Device), the strap and device that now keeps my heart beating as I wait for a transplant.

When I reflect on this journey, I don’t speak as a medical professional, but as a patient who’s had to learn how to live with both the physical and emotional challenges that come with heart failure. I was diagnosed in April 2022, and my condition progressed quickly. What followed was a 45-day hospital stay and a life-changing surgery to implant the LVAD that now sustains me.

For me, documenting this journey isn’t just about sharing medical updates, it’s about finding and living my purpose. I want to share my experiences to inspire and inform others who are facing serious illnesses, whether heart-related or not. Each post and video I share is a reflection of my growth, gratitude, and resilience.

My faith has been at the center of my strength. I credit God, science, and the unwavering support of my family and friends, especially my wife, who’s also a nurse, for helping me get through each day. Living in the U.S., where advanced treatments and transplants are available, is something I see not only as a blessing but as part of God’s plan for me.

This journey has taught me that survival isn’t just physical. It’s also about mental resilience, gratitude, and acceptance of new realities. Even when I finally receive my heart transplant, I know life will never return to what it once was, and that’s okay. I’ve learned to embrace change as a path toward growth.

All I can think of is tomorrow. I just want to be alive, to wake up every day and feel my heart still beating.

Through sharing my story, I hope to offer more than just a tale of survival. I want to share a message of hope, faith, and the beauty of second chances.
