    Bread Pudding with Cognac Sauce

(Chicago) – I still remember my Lola (“grandmother”) gathering the stale pan de sal from the previous days’ breakfast. She brought out the llaneras (oval metal baking pans) to be used as mold for her impromptu bread pudding. I never actually saw how she made it, not even the ingredients she used. I was too young to meddle in her affairs in the kitchen but I remember I was in the living room, basking in the fragrance coming out of the oven and awaiting a warm slice of bread pudding. This recipe is not a remake of my Lola’s recipe. There is no way I could unearth the exact mixture;…

Staying in for Sunday Brunch: Omelet

(Chicago) – It’s Sunday. My usual routine is to  look at my secret black book of restaurants upon waking up, select a brunch place from the list, get ready and head out. For a change, I’d stay-in and make my own special herbed omelet. I have some fresh mushroom from a farmer’s market which goes perfectly with my egg dish. At the end of brunch, my friend and I had a realization on how simple and cheap to make a really good tasting omelet that is comparable with the ones you get in restaurants for a quarter of the cost. I should do this home brunch more often to save…

    Food For Thought

(Singapore) – It was a rainy Friday lunch break and one of our colleagues suggested a place for our usual Friday lunch outs 2 blocks away from our office – Food For Thought.  The place has a nice, relaxing and comforting atmosphere and for some reasons, it will make you feel light and easy when you enter.  Once we got seated, we immediately realized why.  Their place mats were printed with the following texts: 1.  Support Clean Water 2.  Feed Good Food 3.  Help End Poverty 4.  Educate the People 5.  Encourage Good Acts Also found on the wall – a verse from the Bible, Ecclesiastes 3:13 Then we were…

    Brunch Series: Tavern on Rush

(Chicago) – It’s a sunny Saturday morning and I brought my car to Honda service center for a quick oil change.  Actually, it would not be quick this time since there were other maintenance items that needed to be done. Feeling restless – I would wait for more than 1 hour and pay more than the $40 regular oil change rate. But then again, my safety lies in the condition of my car. So I stopped complaining mentally, left the car and tried to find what else to do in the area. I didn’t realize that I was in Gold Coast area. A few blocks from Honda, I find myself…

    Holeman & Finch Public House

(Atlanta) – When my trip to Atlanta was confirmed, the first place that I would like to visit is Holeman & Finch.  Food Network featured this place in one of its episodes of “The Best Thing I Ever Ate” for its burger. I am curious how superior their burgers are over the numerous gourmet burger joints mushrooming all over Chicago.  I excitedly planned my first evening to feast on Holeman’s handcrafted burger. My friend and I arrived around 9pm. Most disappointingly, the burgers sold out 10 minutes before we entered the door. I didn’t pay attention much when I watched TBTIEA; they only make 24 burgers every night. Whether it…

I got Lucky at Lucky’s Cafe

(Cleveland)– Guy Fieri of Food Network featured this place in his show “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives”.  When I visited Cleveland not so long ago, I planned to spend my first brunch at Lucky’s. The restaurant is located in the historic and artsy neighborhood of Tremont, 10 minutes away from downtown Cleveland. As much as I wanted to stay in downtown since I am not familiar with the city, I headed out the next morning and relegated my brunch fate to Manolo, my Garmin GPS. I had high expectations that Lucky’s Café will give me a very good impression of Cleveland food. To simplify my morning, my friend and I just…

    Sola is not Alone

(Chicago) – I heard some good feedbacks from my friends about the food at Sola.  When I saw this place available in restaurant.com, I quickly bought a $25 gift certificate for a cheaper price.  However, these coupons have a lot of restrictions. For instance, it can only be used during weekdays, excluding Fridays, which is perfect for me; I prefer that.  I hate it when my food experience is affected by annoying crowd and long wait times just to get a table. So it is a slow Wednesday summer night, I am off to Sola to validate what I heard through the grapevine. The ambiance is neat and classy. Not…

    Hancock’s Signature Room

(Chicago) –  I still can’t get over the feeling of being a tourist in Chicago. After living here for almost 5 years, I still can’t help but go to “touristy” places once in a while, especially when I have visitors. I am as excited as my guests.  One time, I brought a visiting friend to see Millennium Park and I was more thrilled than her. We looked at her camera afterwards and guess what; I had more pictures of myself than her. She asked me, “Was it your first time here in this park as well?”  And I replied, embarrassed.  “This is my 6th time.”

Hot Hot Hot – NOT!!! Chili’s invades Singapore!

(Singapore) – Once in Manila, now in Singapore!  Seems like it has been stalking me as I have never eaten in the Manila resto.  Somehow it managed to find me here in Singapore!  I have not tried Chili’s in Manila before – not for any reason but because all along I thought it only serves hot hot hot food as the name implies.  Well, fortunately, for not-too-much-spicy lovers like me, I managed to step into the Mexican ambience that is Chili’s Singapore!
