(Chicago) –  I still can’t get over the feeling of being a tourist in Chicago. After living here for almost 5 years, I still can’t help but go to “touristy” places once in a while, especially when I have visitors. I am as excited as my guests.  One time, I brought a visiting friend to see Millennium Park and I was more thrilled than her. We looked at her camera afterwards and guess what; I had more pictures of myself than her. She asked me, “Was it your first time here in this park as well?”  And I replied, embarrassed.  “This is my 6th time.”

With all honesty, I tried to shy away from “touristy” places. I mean those places that you see in pamphlets about Chicago when you arrive at the airport, like Sears Tower, Millennium Park, Buckingham fountain and more. That’s why every time I have some guests recently; I try, as much as possible, to show them the off the beaten path beauty of Chicago; like those places in the neighboring villages and suburbs. However, there is one, among the most familiar tourist sites, that I always include in my site-seeing agenda with my guests. This is the Signature Room at the John Hancock Tower.

The restaurant is located in the 95th floor of this world famous building. As we all know, Chicago is known for its skyscrapers and landmark architectures. The Signature Room can show you a literally high-level view of the whole city. Here are the views from my table.

Although Sears Tower, now Willis, is much higher than Hancock and promises a better and wider view, I still opt to go to Signature Room.  Why? Because you hit 2 birds with one stone; for one price ($20), you get a lunch buffet and a fantastic city view. Going up to the Hancock Observatory alone costs $15 per person already.  Why not have a decent and abundant lunch while seeing the picturesque Chicago en masse.

Don’t expect much from a buffet.  The food is not the best Chicago has to offer but it is not bad either. The food is generally decent.  The gorgeous view will compensate for some of the forgettable dishes in the buffet spread. For those carnivores, there is a carving station of prime rib, sometimes ham, to get your money’s worth. If you have the luxury of time, schedule to come here on a Tuesday and the lunch buffet is only $15. Not bad…

Do my visiting friends really get a good value for their money in Signature Room?  My answer is a resounding “yes”.  It is clear to me that they spent a lot of money already just to travel here. They deserve to experience the fun, exciting, delicious and unique side of Chicago and the Signature Room made that indelible mark in their journey.
