(Chicago) – To pay tribute to the new Miss Universe, Jimena Navarrete, from Mexico, who floored the Philippine’s Venus Raj in the recent pageant; I’d like to post something Mexican. 🙂  Speaking of Mexican food, what better topic to share than my favorite neighborhood Mexican joint, Buena Vista?!

This is not best Mexican restaurant that I’ve ever been to.  But 2 reasons why I regularly frequent this place: it is a few minutes walk from where I live and they serve a really good “Caldo de Res”.  Yes, the closest version to the Filipino beef soup (“nilagang baka”).  Actually, I think Buena Vista’s is better because it is not greasy at all, in spite of the huge chunks of tender short beef ribs.  Also, the pieces of carrots, zucchini and corn make the soup heartier. To turn up the volume some more, you can sprinkle the soup with fresh onion, cilantro and lime which are served on the side.

I have been here countless times and without any exaggeration, Caldo de Res is the only thing that I always order.  I get to taste the other dishes too; whatever my dine-out companions order. A tasting bite of their other dishes is enough for me but when it comes to Caldo de Res, I want my full bowl! Tan

rico! Viva Mexico!
