(Cleveland)– Guy Fieri of Food Network featured this place in his show “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives”.  When I visited Cleveland not so long ago, I planned to spend my first brunch at Lucky’s.

The restaurant is located in the historic and artsy neighborhood of Tremont, 10 minutes away from downtown Cleveland. As much as I wanted to stay in downtown since I am not familiar with the city, I headed out the next morning and relegated my brunch fate to Manolo, my Garmin GPS. I had high expectations that Lucky’s Café will give me a very good impression of Cleveland food.

To simplify my morning, my friend and I just ordered whatever Guy Fieri tasted in his show.  Besides, I was extremely hungry and I couldn’t wait any longer. So here’s what we got:

Baked Mac-N-Cheese
cheddar, brie, Parmesan and mozzarella cheeses, baked with pasta and cream, topped with brioche bread crumbs,  served with house-made apple sauce on the side

corned beef, sauerkraut, rye bread and thousand island dressing all house-made, served with Swiss cheese, chips and a pickle.

Velvety smooth rich hot chocolate

The consensus:  I think I just had the best mac and cheese ever, at least to my taste.  All the ingredients blended beautifully on the hot plate and the cheeses were ambrosial and delicious.  The crunchy brioche top and bacon consummately provided the needed texture to creamy pasta. And the apple sauce; Amazing! It held the whole dish in a complete balance.

The Reuben, with generous cuts of moist corned beef, was just equally scrumptious and the Thousand Island dressing brought more life to the sandwich. It was a very happy sandwich. And that made me a very happy diner.
