(Chicago) – A friend of a friend is raving about this place. I live in Chicago and this resturant is in Skokie, a northwest suburb of Chicago. But I was intrigued enough to spend one Saturday morning to go drive to this place and taste what it has to offer. I was hoping I won’t regret driving for more than an hour.
Gourmet Pita is humbly located in a nondescript strip mall. The place is not fancy at all but I didn’t really care much. I came for the food. My friend and I arrived just a few minutes after opening which can be a bad or good thing. Bad in the sense that we will wait longer since they are not completely prepped up yet; or good because the food is surely fresh. Well, it’s too early to be too negative. But I feel some good vibes in this place, hopefully the food will justify my feelings.
Here’s what we got:
Hummus – a creamy dip made from chickpeas and lemon juice
Shawirma Sandwich – slices of slow roasted marinated beed
French fries and Baklava (struddles filled with walnut and topped with light syrup)
Gourmet Plate – a combination of kabobs, shawirma and a falafil
Falafil – fried patty of seasoned ground chickpeas, onion, garlic and parsley
To start off, the food is inexpensive but there are tons of flavors in every dish. Although they serve the food on Styrofoam plates and plastic utensils, the dishes look presentable and more importantly, great tasting. I must say the fries is extraordinarily crunchy and very addictive. Also, the hummus is rich; the roasted meats remain moist ;and the interior of the crusty falafel is appetizingly green and fresh.
No, I didn’t regret coming here. The tasty Mediterranean food and warm welcome of the owners are worth the drive. The family owners treated us like one of their family members. It surely elevated my dining experience.
Will I be back here? Yes, especially when I’m in the area.
